Reports emerged on Thursday that several Republican-led states are clashing with federal election monitors over the security of polling places, with just 4 days to go before the election.

According to ABC News, federal poll monitors sent by the Department of Justice (DOJ) are supposedly a tradition so that the federal government can “help assess compliance with federal voting laws.” But states such as Texas have since claimed that federal monitors are not allowed inside polling locations in the state, instead preferring state inspectors to fulfill their purpose.

In September, Texas Democrats sent a letter to the DOJ demanding that the federal government interfere and override the authority of the state government.

“Recent actions by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have increased the urgency for federal election monitors in our state,” said the letter. The letter also falsely claimed that the lack of federal monitors disproportionately affects minority voters, claiming that “as the largest minority state under total conservative control, Texas voters — particularly minority voters — are constantly under attack for merely attempting their rights.”

Similarly, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-Ar.) announced that she would not permit federal poll monitors in the state on Tuesday.

“Gov. Sanders will not permit the Department of Justice to improperly intimate or unduly influence Arkansas voters which would be a violation of state law,” said spokesman Sam Dubke in a statement.

The state of Missouri, which previously banned federal poll monitors in 2022, also said that Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft (R-Mo.) will “again reject any push by the DOJ to interfere in Missouri elections.”

And in Florida, federal poll monitors are only allowed outside polling locations, but will be prohibited from going inside. The Florida Department of State said in a 2022 letter to the DOJ that the presence of such federal monitors “would be counterproductive and could potentially undermine confidence in the election.”

The DOJ issued a statement in response to the state bans, claiming that “the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has long monitored elections in jurisdictions around the country to protect the rights of voters.”

“We will continue to use every tool at our disposal to enforce the federal voting rights laws and ensure that all eligible voters are able to vote and have their vote counted, including by deploying monitors wherever we deem appropriate,” the DOJ spokesman continued.
