Violence against GOP politicians continues: Attacks on Scalise, Paul, Zeldin, and now trying to kill Trump

One would never know this from most of the news headlines in this country, but the facts prove otherwise. From the shooting and previous assassination attempt of congressional Republicans on a baseball field practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game that left Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) badly wounded, to the attack on Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), to the attack on former congressman Lee Zeldin, Saturday’s attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump was just the latest radical act of violence against Republican politicians.

The Left has spent weeks, months, years, heck, even decades, trying to portray the country’s right-wingers as violent people. From the Tea Party of yesteryear to pro-life supporters to the much-maligned MAGA Republicans, people on the Right have been regularly vilified as a domestic existential threat to the United States. Yet, all the while, the country witnesses repeated acts of violence against Republicans that get summarily dismissed by members of the media, left-wingers, and Democratic politicians.

This isn’t to say those on the Right are not without their transgressions, but their acts pale in comparison to the frequency and magnitude of those by the Left. Don’t just take my word for it. Do something that drives left-wingers bonkers: consider the facts.

In June 2017, a deranged left-wing activist tried to assassinate congressional Republicans who were practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. Six people were injured by the assailant, including Scalise, then the U.S. House Majority Whip. He was very seriously wounded and had to be rushed to a hospital, where he reportedly fought for his life.

Also in 2017, Sen. Rand Paul was attacked in Bowling Green, Kentucky, by a neighbor. The assault left Paul with several broken ribs. The attacker claimed the incident stemmed from his frustration over a landscaping issue. Other reports hinted the attack could have been politically motivated, an insinuation that the lawyers for Paul’s attacker denies. The Washington Examiner reported that Paul’s attacker was “aggressively anti-Trump and anti-GOP in his social media, calling for the impeachment of the president and urging special counsel Robert Mueller to ‘fry Trump’s gonads.’”

In July 2022, while campaigning as the Republican candidate for New York governor, then-congressman Lee Zeldin was attacked by a man while giving a speech. Zeldin and the attacker tussled before security personnel came to Zeldin’s defense. The attacker had a “pointed weapon” in his possession and tried to stab Zeldin. Fortunately, Zeldin was not seriously injured.

And then there was Saturday’s attempted assassination of Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A gunman was positioned on the roof of a building located near the rally and tried to kill the former president. He narrowly avoided death as a bullet hit him in the ear, leaving him bloodied and the Secret Service rushing him off the stage. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Trump was lucky to have survived and, arguably, escaped death by an inch or so.

Saturday’s event must be a wake-up call to the perils associated with the current culture of demonizing and vilifying conservatives and Republicans. The inflammatory rhetoric that has become a staple of left-wing politics has finally reached a dangerous crescendo. Republican politicians are being targeted, and – given that a rally attendee was killed on Saturday — innocent people are now dying as a result.

The kind of violence Republican politicians have endured is unacceptable. It is a true threat to our constitutional republic. These types of attacks do not consistently happen to politicians on the Left the way they do to Republicans. It is time to stop acting like it does.

Enough is enough. These agitators have done enough damage to the country. Now, voters must hold them accountable in November.
