Republicans are one seat closer to securing the Senate majority after West Virginia GOP Gov. Jim Justice won the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Joe Manchin III.
Mr. Manchin changed his party affiliation from Democrat to independent this year before deciding to retire rather than run for reelection or another office, but he still caucuses with the Democrats.
The Associated Press called the race for Mr. Justice as soon as the state’s polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Democrat Glenn Elliott, the former mayor of Wheeling, ran against him.
Mr. Justice’s win was expected since Democrats did not invest any money in the race.
Democrats currently control the Senate with a 51-49 majority.
Republicans’ pickup in West Virginia puts them in position to win the majority if their two incumbents in semi-competitive races in Florida and Texas survive their races and they win just one more seat. They have up to eight opportunities where Democrats are defending seats in states considered in play to varying degrees.
