While almost all of the post-election focus has been on President-elect Donald Trump’s historic victory, as well as Republican wins in the U.S. House and Senate, the GOP also managed to make massive gains in state legislatures across the nation.

In battleground Michigan, Republicans wrestled full control away from Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer by taking control of the State House. Republicans needed to win 56 seats in order to secure a majority in the chamber. As of 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, the GOP is currently projected to surpass that margin with 59 seats.

The result was boosted by a major flip in the 109th House District, where former meteorologist Karl Bohnak was able to unseat Democrat incumbent Rep. Jenn Hill, leaving Whitmer as a “lame duck” governor.

“With a Republican majority, Michigan will have a stronger voice fighting for the values of hardworking families and addressing the issues that matter most — safe schools and neighborhoods, an affordable economy, and a government that provides value for dollars,” Minority Leader Matt Hall wrote in a caucus email on Wednesday morning.

Elsewhere in the “blue wall,” Republican nominee Dave Sunday, who currently serves as the District Attorney in York County, Pennsylvania, defeated Democrat challenger Eugene DePasquale in the state’s attorney general race. The seat is currently held by Michelle Henry, who replaced current Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro after he was elected in 2022. Republicans also managed to maintain control of the Pennsylvania Senate, while control of the State House is still up for grabs.

In Wisconsin, Republicans secured a number of key flips and maintained control of the state assembly.

GOP success was not contained to swing states.

In Vermont, the party managed to flip the Lieutenant Governor office, in addition to five flips in the State Senate and a whopping 18 seats in the State House. Republican Governor Phil Scott — a moderate who voted for Vice President Harris — also won re-election. With the flips, Republicans will control their highest number of seats in the state legislature since 2002.

Democrats also lost control of their trifecta in Minnesota despite Governor Tim Walz running atop the national ballot. Control of the State House is now tied after several Republican flips, representing a major setback for the governor.
