A quarter of Americans now hold unfavorable views of both President Biden and former President Donald Trump, marking the highest percentage of such “double haters” at this stage in the past ten elections, a new poll shows.

The level of double-haters has almost doubled since 2020, from 13% to 25%, a new study from Pew Research reveals. The mood is contributing to the widespread dread surrounding the upcoming presidential rematch between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump, making it one of the most contentious elections in recent history.

Political experts suggest the outcome of the election will hinge on approximately 6% of voters in pivotal swing states. Many of these voters are expected to reluctantly choose between two candidates they dislike come November.

Adding another layer of complexity, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is on the ballot in several key states, presenting a third-party alternative that both the Biden and Trump campaigns are working hard to counteract.

The ability to sway the “double haters” is seen as crucial for either candidate to secure a victory in the Electoral College, especially given the narrow margins expected.

In recent weeks, Mr. Trump has made strides in mending relationships with his Republican critics. A notable visit to Capitol Hill, which included a handshake with a longtime foe, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, was aimed at showcasing unity within the GOP following the primaries.

In addition, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, whose primary supporters predominantly consist of those skeptical of both candidates, endorsed Mr. Trump last month, further consolidating his support base.

But a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll indicates that 67% of “double haters” believe Mr. Trump should end his campaign due to his felony conviction, adding another layer of unpredictability to the race.
