Speaking in both posts on and a video posted to his Truth Social social media platform, the 2024 GOP presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump, has pledges to no longer tax Social Security benefits received by seniors, saying that the “inflation nightmare” is ravaging elderly Americans.

In one post, for example, the former president said that the “inflation nightmare” means he is promising to stop taxing the Social Security benefits for seniors, saying, “To help seniors on fixed incomes who are suffering the ravages of Comrade Kamala Harris’ inflation nightmare — I’m promising NO TAX on SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS!”

Similarly, in a short video attached to the post, the former president commented on his desire to protect the program and help ensure seniors get all that they are due from the programs, writing, “I will always protect Social Security as I did just four years ago. Our great senior citizens will be happy and they will be safe. And they will be getting their money from Medicare and Social Security.”

Similarly, on July 31 of 2024, the former president posted on his Truth Social platform that he doesn’t think that seniors should have to pay taxes on that income they get from their Social Security benefits, saying, in an all-caps message on the social media platform, “SENIORS SHOULD NOT PAY TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY!”

The former has said much the same thing other times. For example, back in August of 2024, he said, during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” “We can do a lot of things to help the people. People on Social Security are being killed, and one of the things I’m doing is no tax for seniors on Social Security, and I’ll get it done quickly.”

Rep. John Larson, (D-Conn), spoke to CNBC.com about the Trump proposal to cut taxes on Social Security,  saying that it is a “fatal mistake” because it means that the trust fund will run out much more quickly. He said, “He comes out and says he’s going to have a tax break but doesn’t say how he’s going to pay for that. In essence, his proposal would end up cutting the Social Security trust fund.”

Rep. Larson’s “solution” to the problem was raising taxes rather than cutting them, saying that lifting the cap on income taxes for Social Security is only making the wealthy pay their “fair share,” saying, “We’re going to lift the cap on people [earning] over $400,000 and the other side says, ‘Here you go again. It’s tax the wealthy,’ No, it’s have them pay their fair share.”

Rep. Jodey Arrington, (R-TX), commenting on the matter, said, “Even if I disagree, and in some cases wildly disagree, with his way of solving it, we’re going to have to get in a room and we’re going to have to hold hands and leap off the cliff of those who criticize us who do anything to reform the program.”
