Democratic lawmaker Dean Phillips (D-MN) slammed Vice President Kamala Harris over her heavy anti-Trump focus in messaging, saying that she has wasted time and money pushing a message to tear down the GOP nominee. He said that the Democratic nominee is "losing voters" over the messaging.
Phillips posted on his X account on Monday, "A billion dollars will have been wasted on losing voters by condemnation versus winning them by invitation. She just needed to be clear about what she believes, what she will do differently than Biden, and offer common sense solutions to our problems."
He then highlighted a New York Times headline: "Instead... 'Starring in Kamala Harris' closing argument: Donald Trump.'" The report reflected a recent shift in Harris' messaging that has been geared towards painting Trump as unfit to lead in office and that he is an "unserious man."
Phillips had run a more moderate campaign than Biden during the primaries against the incumbent president at the time, and had dropped his leadership role in the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee in order to take Biden on. He ultimately was not successful in beating the Democratic president in a primary but ran on being more youthful and reaching out to the other side.
He ended up being proven right on the front of Biden's age, and then advocated for an open process before Harris swooped in to take the nomination from Biden, per the New York Post. Although Harris attempted to make more appeals to Republicans and independent voters in the beginning of her campaign and tried to stray from Biden, she recently said she would not do anything differently than her boss during the last four years and has ramped up her attacks on Trump.
