New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D-N.Y.) is soon to be indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that currently remain unknown, making him the first mayor in the city’s 126-year history to be charged while still in office.
As Breitbart reports, the indictment is expected to be unsealed on Thursday. This development comes after Mayor Adams and various members of his inner circle have faced up to four different federal investigations within the last year alone.
But Adams remained defiant in his first statement on the matter on Wednesday night, saying “I always knew that if I stood my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target — and a target I became. If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
He previously told reporters that he was shocked by the high number of investigations against him.
“I take them extremely seriously,” said Adams during a press briefing earlier this month. “I have spent more than 20 years in law enforcement, and so every member of my administration knows my expectations that we must follow the law.”
Mayor Adams had previously had his cell phones seized and his residence searched by federal agents in the midst of corruption investigations. In response to the growing scandal, several high-profile staffers in his office have resigned, including his chief counsel, the police commissioner, and chancellor of schools.
Far-left Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) released a statement calling for Adams’ resignation.
“I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” she wrote in a statement on X on Wednesday. “The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening government function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration. For the good of the city, he should resign.”
Adams was first elected Mayor of New York City in 2021. After eight rounds of voting in the Democratic Party’s ranked-choice primary, he was selected as the Democratic nominee; he then went on to defeat the Republican nominee, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, in the general election.
