Hawley: Acting USSS Dir. Rowe Called to Complain About Whistleblower Allegations; Continues to Stonewall Congressional Oversight

Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe allegedly called Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) Wednesday to complain about his whistleblower reports and requests for information, while refusing to cooperate with Congressional oversight of his agency.

As a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC), Senator Hawley has received numerous whistleblower allegations surrounding the attempted assassination of former President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, and has sent Secret Service Director multiple letters requesting information. The senator said Rowe has declined to “substantively” address any of the allegations.

In a series of posts on X, Hawley shared details about his conversation with Rowe, and his mounting frustration with the director’s stonewalling.

“I just had an extraordinary conversation with Director Rowe at the Secret Service, who called me personally to dispute a whistleblower allegation – but refuses to respond in writing,” Hawley wrote Wednesday afternoon. “Just as he has declined to respond substantively to ANY of the whistleblowers’ allegations.”

Hawley said “Rowe complained about whistleblowers and complained about requests for information based on whistleblower reports, adding that in response, he informed the Secret Service director that “it is his JOB to provide the facts to the public and Congress.”

The Missouri senator added: “Stonewalling must stop. And I reminded him whistleblowers are *protected under federal law.*”

Hawley shared that he also “emphasized to Rowe that it is indefensible that his agency has not cooperated fully with congressional investigators – to the point that today the Homeland Security Committee again adopted my legislation to COMPEL Secret Service & DHS to cooperate.”

The senator introduced an amendment last week requiring Rowe to submit to the Committee “any and all information in its possession pertaining to the July 13 assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.” Related legislation was adopted in the committee on Wednesday.

On September 16, 2024, Hawley released a 22-page whistleblower report detailing the failures of the Secret Service in connection with the attempted assassination. Hawley accused the USSS, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of all trying “to evade real accountability.”

These agencies and their leaders have slow-walked congressional investigations, misled the American people, and shirked responsibility. In response, Senator Hawley personally visited the Butler, Pennsylvania rally site to interview whistleblowers, opened up a whistleblower tip line, and encouraged those with relevant information to tell their stories. Since then, many individuals have come forward with information regarding the events of July 13—from the Secret Service, DHS, and local law enforcement, as well as private citizens.

In his most recent letter, sent on Tuesday, Hawley pressed Rowe for information regarding a whistleblower’s claim that the Secret Service denied the Trump campaign resources and manpower for a rally in Wisconsin, forcing him to cancel the event.

“That contradicts Rowe, who said Trump, Harris and Biden were all getting the same protection,” Hawley wrote on X. “Harris held a WI rally last week.”

On Sept. 19, Hawley sent a letter to Rowe detailing new whistleblower allegations about the Secret Service’s apparent failures to secure known vulnerabilities at former President Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Fla., this past Sunday, Sept. 15.

“[A]n individual who has in fact protected President Trump at that very location—alleges there are ‘known vulnerabilities’ in the fence line surrounding the course: places that offer a clear line of sight to the former president and others playing the course,” wrote Senator Hawley. “The reality is that the would-be assassin should never have been able to linger around the course for that long undetected.”

The Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday released a 91-page Interim Report detailing multiple leadership failures at USSS, “including evidence that Rowe gave misleading testimony to Congress in July,” according to Hawley. The report also includes a lengthy list of “outstanding lines of inquiry” that the Committee intends to pursue.

“There must be accountability,” the senator wrote.
