A dead Democrat has won his primary bid to retain his congressional seat in New Jersey after running uncontested. New Jersey congressman for the 10th district Ronald Payne Jr. died in April at the age of 65 from a heart attack. 

Payne, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, was the only name on the Democratic primary ticket. The deadline to file for the primary ballot was in March, prior to his death. Payne had held the seat since 2012 and was preceded by his father, who held the seat for 20 years before also dying while serving the people of New Jersey in Congress.

A special election will be held to replace Payne on July 16 and the Democrat field already has some dozen candidates seeking the office. New Jersey's 10th district spans Newark, Hudson, Union and Essex counties and has been held by a Democrat since 1947. Carmen Bucco won for the GOP.

Across the New Jersey primary, Donald Trump won uncontested in the GOP presidential race. Incumbent Joe Biden won for the Democrats, although 41,461 ballots were case for "uncommitted." Those votes are essentially anti-Israel votes from people who oppose Israel's fight against Palestinian terror group Hamas and Biden's support for it. 

Andy Kim won the Democrat primary for New Jersey's senate seat while Curtis Bashaw won for the Republican side.
