Minnesota elections officials said they kicked about 1,000 names off their active voter rolls this week after a challenge by the Republican National Committee.
The move came after the RNC said the state mailed a primary ballot to a noncitizen earlier this year.
The RNC filed an official request asking the state to go through its rolls and try to weed out other noncitizens who may have ended up on the list.
In a letter dated Thursday, Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson said officials did find some names that had to be suspended because of questions about identity and citizenship.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is the Democrats’ vice presidential nominee and Republicans said the dirty voter rolls are a black eye on his administration of the state.
“Without the efforts of the RNC and MNGOP, Walz would have quietly allowed noncitizens to remain on the voter rolls and cast ballots this election,” said RNC Chairman Michael Whatley.
The issue arose after Minnesota adopted an automatic voter registration system, which has added tens of thousands of names to its lists. After the RNC’s prodding, Mr. Jacobson said the state reviewed 103,986 records and suspended 1% of the names “pending confirmation of various pieces of voter registration information, including address, name and citizenship.”
Minnesota had 3.6 million registered voters as of Sept. 3.
Mr. Jacobson said suspension doesn’t automatically mean the person was a noncitizen, but it does mean there was an irregularity, including missing documents, that deserved the person being erased from the active voter list.
“Minnesota has a proud tradition of broad voter participation and unquestionably fair and secure elections,” he said.
