With just over four months left before Joe Biden will be replaced by the winner of the 2024 election, his administration has been announcing numerous new efforts to spend as much money as possible on so-called “green energy” and climate-based programs.
According to Axios, several announcements within the last week included the finalization of a new marine sanctuary, as well as another $7.3 billion to be spent on rural electric cooperatives, or co-ops. These rapid advances are most likely in anticipation of former President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, as he has vowed to roll back many of these programs and salvage unspent funds from the Inflation Reduction Act, which, despite its name, was more focused on “global warming” than on inflation.
Other announcements included $100 million to be spent on refining extreme weather forecasting at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and another $300 million to go to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to focus on greenhouse gas emissions among Native American communities.
However, White House officials have denied that the sudden burst of spending is in anticipation of the election results, and insisted that they have always rushed to spend money on climate initiatives.
“I cannot remember a moment in time during this administration when we were not sprinting,” said White House climate adviser Ali Zaidi.
Nevertheless, it is estimated that the White House will not be able to spend all of the money that Congress has appropriated for certain agencies, especially the Energy Department, by the time Biden’s term ends. Some funds are still in the stage where they are awaiting “requests for proposal.”
“But that’s an ongoing process, and frankly, the agencies have been really, really remarkable at implementing that,” Zaidi remarked.
Some of this spending has already caused backlash for the Biden-Harris Administration, particularly with regards to the additional funding of the NOAA. The agency has been accused by congressional Republicans of utilizing a biased dataset which falsely claims that “global warming” is real, and has subsequently been cited by the White House as a reason for additional climate spending and energy restrictions.
