Closing Arguments for Trump Trial Set to Begin

Lawyers for the defense and prosecution will today, Tuesday, May 28, deliver their closing arguments in the so-called “hush money” trial of former President Donald Trump. Once concluded, Judge Juan Merchan will instruct the 12 jurors and deliberation will commence. Trump faces 34 felony charges over the alleged misfiling of paperwork during the 2016 election.

Possible Outcomes: Deliberation could last anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks, and there are a number of possible outcomes. The jury could find Trump guilty on all charges, conviction on some and acquittal on others, acquittal on all counts, or a hung jury – meaning DA Alvin Bragg could potentially choose to refile the charges. A final possibility is that there could be a “directed verdict” from the bench, whereby Judge Merchan could take the decision away from the jury and issue an acquittal – this is the least likely of all outcomes.

Hunter Biden Used Sandy Hook For Joe-China Biz Meeting

A distasteful disclosure from the Hunter Biden business dealings investigation. “Hunter Biden used his dad’s appearance at a Sandy Hook shooting memorial event to coordinate a previously unknown planned meeting between the former vice president and a Chinese business partner, newly unveiled texts showed,” The New York Post reports. “On Dec. 12, 2017, Hunter messaged CEFC executive Liu Yadong on WeChat to arrange a meeting with his powerful dad, documents released this week by the House Ways and Means Committee revealed,” the paper relates.

 United Jet Catches Fire Before Takeoff

It was another bad day for one of America’s most prominent airlines. “A United Airlines jet aborted takeoff after the plane’s engine caught fire Monday afternoon at O’Hare International Airport,” The Chicago Sun-Times reports. “Flight 2901, heading to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, had an engine catch fire about 2 p.m. when the aircraft was on the taxiway, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The Airbus A320 was towed back to the gate, where passengers deplaned, the FAA said. No injuries were reported,” the paper notes.

McCaul: House ‘Moving Forward’ With Weapons For Taiwan

Congress is standing behind Taiwan. “A US congressional delegation met with Taiwan’s new president on Monday and promised weapons the self-governing island ordered in the face of threats from China were on their way,” Axios reports. “The visit, led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-TX), comes days after the Chinese military held drills around the democratically run island it claims is its territory in protest at the inauguration of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te,” the news site details.

NBA Legend Bill Walton Dies at 71

The NBA’s original granola hippie center has passed away. “Bill Walton, who was one of the best college basketball players ever, won the 1978 NBA MVP award and a two NBA championships with the Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics, has died Monday at the age of 71. Walton passed after a prolonged bout with cancer, the NBA announced,” CBS Sports reports.

RIP: “UCLA went 86-4 over Walton’s three college seasons, and he played a part in what is still a Division I record 88-game winning streak. Walton made just as many waves off the court while he was in Los Angeles. During his junior season, he was arrested at a Vietnam War protest,” the network states. He was drafted by Portland and led the team to an NBA title in the 1976-77 season. Injuries plagued him thereafter. He later played for his hometown San Diego Clippers before enjoying a late-career renaissance as a sixth man with the Boston Celtics.
