Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, of Uganda, died on Thursday after she was allegedly doused in gas and set on fire by her ex-boyfriend, according to The Star Newspaper. The marathon runner suffered extensive burns in the Sunday attack. She had just returned home after competing in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.

According to authorities, Cheptegei was targeted after attending church with her two daughters in northwest Kenya, where she lived and trained. She had reportedly been in a dispute with her former boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, over a plot of land. He reportedly broke into the athlete's home ahead of the attack and waited for her to return home from church.

"Upon returning, Dickson, who had procured petrol, began pouring it on Rebecca before he set her ablaze," said Jeremiah Ole Kosion, the Trans-Nzoia County police commander. "The two were rescued by neighbors who put out the fire and rushed them to hospital."

Both of them were injured in the blaze, which resulted in 75 percent of Cheptegei's body being burned. Marangach is reportedly still recovering at the hospital in the ICU. Police are investigating the attack as a domestic incident.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in Peace," the Uganda Athletics Federation wrote on X.

Joseph Cheptegei, Rebecca's father, told The Standard that the pair had been separated for a long time. They were scheduled to appear in court regarding a land dispute about her home in western Kenya.

The heartbroken dad said he lost a "very supportive daughter," explaining that she not only provided for their entire family but financially helped out other athletes.

Cheptegei was born and raised in Cheminy, Uganda. She made her Olympic debut last month in Paris, finishing in 44th place in the women's marathon event.
