In an effort to honor preborn babies who have been killed through abortion, pro-life Alaskans plan to assemble at Sacred Heart Church in Fairbanks on Sept. 14 at 12 p.m. The gathering is part of the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children, which was observed in more than 200 locations across the country last year.

The Fairbanks event is sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus, Interior Right to Life and The Legion of Mary. It will occur at Sacred Heart Church on Peger Road at The Knights of Columbus Memorial Pavilion.

“Each year it is estimated that somewhere between 150-250 children are being aborted at our local Planned Parenthood Infanticide Mill,” a notice from the Fairbanks organizers states. “We have no way of knowing how many children are being exterminated by chemical abortions, but it’s the method of over 70% of abortions now. Each child was wonderfully and fearfully made in the Image of God. Each boy and girl were assigned and designed for a special purpose by their Creator. Please join us in remembering each of them as their precious and miraculous lives were taken way too soon.”

Now in its 12th year, the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children is one way to help people realize the reality of abortion, and cut through the deception that many cling to in order to justify the killing of an unborn baby.

While Fairbanks’ event will occur outside a church, in numerous locations around the country, pro-lifers will gather at gravesites where aborted babies are known to have been buried.

“This impact, whereby abortion no longer remains an abstraction, can be brought to an even more profound level when experienced during an event, such as the funeral for an aborted baby,” the national website for the Day of Remembrance states. “Tens of thousands of these children have been retrieved and buried at gravesites across our country. The stories of how they were killed, how they were found, and how they were buried, along with the pictures and videos that document those events, are powerful tools to awaken the consciences of our fellow citizens.”

One of the goals of the annual events is to raise awareness of humanity of abortion victims.

“But while a funeral and burial for an aborted baby may be a relatively rare event, the opportunity to visit the burial places and recall how those children got there does not have to be rare—in fact, it shouldn’t be,” the national website notes. “Pro-lifers should be visiting these gravesites—and other memorial sites dedicated to aborted babies—as a regular part of their pro-life witness. That’s what the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children is all about.”

The gatherings also aim to offer hope and healing to women who have had abortions and people who have been hurt by abortion such as fathers and grandparents who were never allowed to grieve the death of a child killed through abortion.

While the Fairbanks is the only Alaska community scheduled to hold a remembrance for the unborn on Sept. 14, Anchorage has a special area in the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery called Memorial to the Unborn. The National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children has identified this site as a possible location for a day of remembrance.
