Portland, Oregon may well be one of the most progressive cities in the nation. Many of us remember the nightly riots of 2020 that continued there well beyond the point where they'd burned out (pun fully intended) in most other cities.

Amid the turmoil, Soros-backed District Attorney Mike Schmidt took office. He had all the right politics for the city and at a time when people were furious, that was probably the only way a candidate was going to become DA.
Four years later, Schmidt sought to get a second term.
The people of Portland decided he really needed to seek employment elsewhere.
On Tuesday night, voters in Multnomah County, Oregon fired one-term George Soros-backed incumbent District Attorney Mike Schmidt.Fox 12 called the race at approximately 9:30 pm local time with Schmidt’s opponent Nathan Vasquez leading 58 percent to 42 percent. In a non-partisan primary, if a candidate garners over 50 percent of the vote, they are declared the winner of the election but don’t take office until January 2025.
Portland @DAMikeSchmidt is asking voters to reelect him on May 21. Soros is pouring big bucks into the campaign to gaslight voters about the record killings, riots & drug ODs under Schmidt's leadership. According to the Oregonian, Vasquez, a longtime prosecutor, began working for the District Attorney’s office fresh out of law school. Over the last 24 years, he worked his way up the chain to become a supervisor.Vasquez’s campaign focused on Schmidt’s soft-on-crime policies that have led to the deterioration of downtown Portland which has become overrun with homelessness and drugs.
Since he won in 2020, Schmidt has been criticized by the union that represents prosecutors which ended up endorsing Vasquez. Downtown business groups also backed Vasquez.

There's also evidence that he created a very hostile work environment, promoting people based on political reliability versus such trivial things as ability.
That probably didn't help, but the truth of the matter is that while crime in Portland crept up in 2020 as it did throughout the nation, it didn't stay that way. 2021 marked the start of a downward trend for crime throughout the nation.
Except, that is, for Portland, which saw increases in the first two years of Schmidt's tenure. While crime dropped in 2023, it was still well above where it was when Schmidt took office.
And this is not good news for President Biden and the rest of the Democratic Party.
I know this is a local election, but this is also Portland. It's one of the most extreme progressive cities in the country, and they just rejected an extremely progressive district attorney. If they've lost Portland to any degree, how much have they lost the rest of the nation?
It's not proof positive that Biden is doomed come November, but it can't really make anyone in his campaign staff feel warm and tingly. This isn't exactly a sign that things are going swimmingly for the progressive side of the political equation.

For Portland, I hope they can start to get a handle on things. There are a lot of good, decent people who live in the city who never wanted to have to deal with the rampant crime Portland has experienced under Schmidt. Now, maybe they can get some peace.
And yeah, a lot of them voted against Schmidt four years ago, so they really weren't asking for it.
Now their days of having to put up with it are numbered.
