Left-wing independent presidential candidate Cornel West will be back on the ballot in Michigan after a judge overturned the Michigan Bureau of Elections’s decision to declare him ineligible. The effort to toss West from the ballot was pushed by the Michigan Democratic Party, Michigan’s Democratic secretary of state, and “a voter backed by a Democratic-aligned political action committee.”

Similarly, Green Party candidate Jill Stein won ballot access in Wisconsin after the state Supreme Court dismissed the Democratic National Committee’s challenge to her candidacy. Stein will also be on the ballot in other swing states, including Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada. Stein, West, and Party for Socialism and Liberation candidate Claudia De la Cruz were blocked from the ballot in Georgia after a Democratic challenge, though Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R-GA) could overrule that decision.

For all the sanctimonious preaching about “protecting democracy,” the Democratic Party has fought tooth and nail to give voters fewer options in swing states because it is an obstacle to the party’s true goal of political power. Democrats are worried that Stein, West, and others will siphon votes from their awful candidate and think they are entitled to the votes that would otherwise go to Stein or West, and so they want to ban those opposition candidates from the ballot.

This is after the party tried to ban former President Donald Trump from the ballot earlier this year. Democrats in Colorado, Maine, and Illinois all tried to keep their main opposition candidate off the ballot in order to “save democracy” because, in their view, democracy can only be saved if the only option voters get is the Democratic Party.

Democrats present themselves as the holier-than-thou defenders of democracy in order to mask just how power-hungry their party is. It’s the same reason they run around calling people election deniers when the party props up and promotes election deniers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, or why they lecture about norms while trying to destroy every system of government they don’t control, including the Supreme Court and the Electoral College.

The Democratic Party will say and do anything for more political power, and that includes presenting itself as the only thing that can save democracy, even as the party tries to make itself the only option available on ballots. The insufferable lectures to voters about how to save the country just add insult to injury to voters who are being deprived of options by the party, and each time the party fails to keep Trump, Stein, or West off the ballot is a win for both voters and the democracy Democrats claim they want to protect.
