President Joe Biden was the keynote speaker on the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday night, delivering a speech that signals the formal end of his political career. He spoke after his daughter and his wife introduced him, showering him with praise.

That was not the thrust of the night, however. Speaker after speaker showed up on stage at the United Center to proclaim Kamala Harris the leader of the future. Hillary Clinton, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jasmine Crocket, Maxine Waters, union leaders and Democrat Party officials all looked past Biden on Monday night, just as they'd been looking past him since he performed so badly in a debate against President Donald Trump on June 27. Realizing Biden couldn't win, the same political party that lauded him on Monday as he delivered his exit speech sought a way to remove him from their party ticket.

Raphael Warnock got the crowd to chant "thank you Joe" as he linked Harris to Biden's record, but he, like the others, emphasized the need to "move forward." Chris Coons stepped out on stage and did something Biden often does, quote his long-deceased parents.

First Lady Jill Biden spoke first out of the Biden family, saying she saw her husband "dig deep into his soul and decide to no longer seek reelection and endorse Kamala Harris." She declared that "Kamala and Tim, you will win," adding that they are "inspiring a new generation." Ashley Biden, Jill and Joe's daughter together, recalled her eighth birthday at an Amtrak station in Wilmington when Biden had to go to DC for work, adding that he is the "OG girl dad" and that she said she could see Biden "valued and trusted women."

"In 2020, my dad selected Kamala HArris to beat Donald Trump, and he knows in 2024 she will beat Donald Trump again. So tonight, I am asking you, if you stood with us in 2020, call upon your courageous heart, stand with us today." She echoed her mother’s sentiment, stating that "this is the fight of our lifetime."

Joe Biden was met with an extended applause from the crowd as well as a sea of "we love Joe" signs. "Thank you Joe," the crowd yelled.

Biden recounted his inauguration, noting that the city was "surrounded by the National Guard" and the Capitol behind him had seen "a violent mob" just weeks before. He said he knew that "there is no place in America for political violence."

"You cannot say you country only when you win." He said that "democracy has prevailed" and "delivered," and now "it must be preserved."

Biden said the country was at an "inflection point" that could determine "the fate of our nation and the world for decades to come. That’s not hyperbole. We’re in the battle for the very soul of America."

He recounted Charlottesville, saying they were "emboldened by a president" and "didn't even bother to wear their hoods." He said the August 2017 incident saw "extremists coming out of the woods, carrying torches, their veins bulging from their necks, carrying Nazi swastikas, enchanting the same exact anti-Semitic vile that was heard of Germany in the early 30s." He lied about the "fine people on both sides" line from Trump that Democrats have latched onto without context, saying that that was the moment he decided he needed to run.

Biden claimed that under his term the US has seen "one of the most extraordinary four years of progress ever, period," saying that 16 million jobs were added, there was record small business growth, a record high stock market, record high 401k, "wages up, inflation down, way down," the smallest wealth gap. He also declared that "we finally beat Big Pharma."

Biden called Trump a "loser," stating that Trump calling the US a "failing nation" under the Biden administration sends a "message around the world. When he talks about America being a failing nation, he says we’re losing. He’s the loser. He’s dead wrong."

Biden claimed that America is "winning," is more prosperous and is safer today than under the Trump administration. He said that the "murder rate is falling faster than any time in history. Violent crime has dropped to the lowest level in more than 50 years. And crime will keep coming down when we put a prosecutor in the Oval Office instead of a convicted felon."

Biden also claimed that Trump "killed the strongest bipartisan border deal in the history of the United States" and that Biden had to take executive action. The border crisis has long plagued the Biden administration, with record-high numbers of illegal immigration being seen every year. It wasn't until nearly 3 and a half years into his term that Biden issued an executive order on the border that still allows in at least 1.5 million illegal immigrants every year.

"During the pandemic, Kamala and I helped states and cities get their schools back open," Biden declared.

Closing out his speech, Biden said "we need you to vote. We need you to keep the Senate. We need you to win back the House of Representatives. We need you to beat Donald Trump." He said the Harris-Walz ticket would " lead America forward, creating more jobs, standing up for workers, growing the economy. Lower the cost American families, so they just have a little more breathing room."

Biden also spread the widely-debunked "bloodbath" hoax. "This sucker means it," Biden said. Trump's bloodbath comments referred to the economic disaster that could result in the car industry if he is not elected.

"I made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you," Biden said. "I gave my best for 50 years, like many of you, I give my heart and soul to our nation." He noted that he is now "too old to stay as president."
