One mom whose son has been held hostage by Hamas for the past seven months showed it’s not all brunch and flower bouquets for everyone on Mother’s Day this year.

Rachel Goldberg-Polin, the mother of 23-year-old Hersh Goldberg-Polin, posted a heart-wrenching Mother’s Day video, reading a letter she wrote on the eve of Hersh’s third birthday, thanking her firstborn toddler “for making me a mother.”

“Because today is Mother’s Day, I decided to read you this letter that I wrote to Hersh the night before he turned 3 years old,” she said before reading the 2003 note.

She also wore a piece of tape on her shirt, numbered 219 — the number of days since her Israeli-American son was abducted from the Nova music festival during the October 7 Hamas massacre.

“Hersh, these last three years have been the most challenging and best years of my life,” she read from the letter. “Nothing can begin to describe my love for you.”

The mother — who has traveled the world advocating for the release of the remaining hostages — noted that she became emotional after she peeked into her son’s bedroom at night to watch him sleep in his blue onesie while clutching his teddy bear.

“I gently touched your long, soft, curly hair that we will cut for the first time in a few days. I went back into my room and I cried and cried.”

After her husband, Jon, went to look at their son, he returned to Rachel and declared, “There will be many more of these,” she said.

She read the translation of a beloved Yiddish lullaby, “Your mother will cry a thousand tears before you grow to be a man.”

Last month, Hamas published a propaganda video depicting a nearly unrecognizable Hersh, gaunt and missing part of his left arm — the first image of him since the deadly massacre. Rachel recounted how “painful” yet “amazing” to see her son alive for the first time.

“One day when you have children, and I can’t even fathom that now, you will know this kind of so much more than love,” she said of her son, who lost part of his left arm during the siege on Israel that left some 1,200 killed and thousands more injured.

“You are my baby. My ultimate goal as a parent is to help you become a confident, self-sufficient and independent person. But that means you won’t need me,” she said, highlighting the bitter irony that she’s become one of the most vocal advocates fighting for the release of her only son and the other hostages. “And I think that is what’s causing my heart to ache so much right now. I want to raise you to become a healthy person of the world.”

The mom, a dual American-Israeli citizen who was named to “Time100: The World’s Most Influential People,” added, “I don’t want to let you go.”

“Time moves so quickly. To understand this, one only needs to look at one’s children. The days fly by and before I know it, we will be taking you to college,” she read. “I can’t imagine what a basketcase I will be then.”

“I wish this could all go more slowly. I treasure each and every moment I spend with you. I am so blessed that it scares me. What did Dada and I do to get so lucky to have you?

“I wish you the best of everything this world has to offer – love, happiness, kindness, success.

“But most of all, I wish you a child like yourself, who will bring to you all the light and delight that you have brought to me.

“I love you to bits, Mama.”

The usually composed mom who makes daily videos about her son, broke down in the clip.

She ended the video, “Hersh, thank you for making me a mother,” followed by words of strength spoken directly to her son, “I love you. Stay strong. Survive.” The usually equanimous mom blew a kiss into the camera, bowed her head and started to sob.

In a separate Mother’s Day post, the proud mom recounted a story of her then-2-year-old Hersh at a playground in his native Berkeley, Calif., along with photos of her and her son throughout his life. She ended the message, “I’m wishing all the moms a Happy Mother’s Day today and just thinking about my Hersh.”

Supporters on social media tried to comfort the heartbroken mom with words of encouragement.

“Every mother in the world shares your tears and we are praying for Hersh,” wrote one supporter.

“Strongest mother ever. We are all thinking of you today and every day. May all hostages be released immediately,” wrote another.
