Iran is meddling in America’s presidential election

U.S. intelligence officials have recently revealed that Iran is trying to undermine former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign through covert online influence operations and fake personas. Department of Justice officials have now arrested operatives looking to assassinate Trump and others. These reports should have been met with an outcry from the press and public that an adversary was trying to tip the scales of a presidential contest. Instead, they have been met with silence.

What can be done to stop Iran? First, we need immediate transparency from the intelligence community to identify which social media accounts have been run by Iranian operatives. These accounts, posing as American activists, are backing anti-Israel protests. The regime is even providing financial support to demonstrators. The public deserves to know if that includes the vile protests we saw outside Union Station during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to a joint session of Congress. The public should be informed on an ongoing basis when and where the Iranian government is meddling.

Importantly, this interference in our country’s affairs is not limited to threats against our electoral process. The regime still is trying to take the lives of former U.S. officials such as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Iran special representative Brian Hook, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley right here on American soil.

As Pompeo himself warned, “[The Iranian regime] will do everything it can to meddle in our democracy to support Kamala Harris, who will continue the same policies of weakness and keep the regime rich and powerful.”

He is sadly correct. The Biden-Harris administration has empowered Iran from day one and allowed the Islamic Republic to get away with funding terrorism and massive advancements in its nuclear weapons capability, without consequence. The administration has failed to enforce oil sanctions and unfrozen funds, providing the regime with access to an extra $100 billion since January 2021. The Iranian regime’s best-case scenario to continue its regional support of terrorism and to obtain a nuclear weapon is a President Kamala Harris.

The world was stunned by a major security lapse at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that nearly cost the former president his life. On Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced it had arrested a Pakistani man with ties to the Iranian regime for his efforts to recruit people to kill Trump and other U.S. officials. If Iran’s assassins were as competent as one 20-year-old American, more of our leaders would have been killed already.

Our safety so far is owed entirely to Iranian incompetence and plain good luck. President Joe Biden’s top national security officials have refused to impose any consequences on the regime for its attempts on American lives. National security adviser Jake Sullivan has warned Iran there will be consequences if it carries out a killing. That threat hasn’t deterred the regime and serves as little solace to those in the line of fire.

Iran’s efforts to attack our homeland and influence our elections demand immediate and robust attention. Iran’s meddling is part of a larger strategy to weaken American influence globally by sowing discord and confusion. The administration must respond forcefully to identify and shut down foreign-operated accounts and enhance the transparency of protests.

If this administration won’t take these basic steps, steps it has eagerly taken when it came to Russian meddling, the public deserves to know why. It is no secret that the Iranian regime would benefit from four more years of Biden-Harris foreign policy toward Iran. If the U.S. government refuses to do more to expose and disrupt the regime’s efforts, then the question must be asked: Does this administration really want it stopped?

Morgan D. Ortagus has served in the last three presidential administrations as U.S. Department of State spokesperson, U.S. Treasury deputy attaché to Saudi Arabia, and a U.S. Navy Reserve intelligence officer.
