Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota and Kamala Harris’ choice for running mate in 2024, is a far-left Democrat. He lied about details about his re-enlistment in the Army National Guard, which led at least one of his former coworkers in Minnesota’s First Battalion-125th Artillery to accuse him of “stolen valor.”
Walz joined the Army National Guard when he was 17 years old, which is more than 40 years ago. He is now 60 years old. He then worked for 20 years before quitting.
“What the hell sort of leadership is that?”
The September 11 attacks happened not long after Walz retired, and he quickly re-enlisted a few weeks afterward. He received a promotion to the rank of command sergeant major in April 2005. The next month, he retired again and started a campaign for Congress, which he eventually won.
That’s when things in his story start to go wrong.
One thing is that early in 2005, Walz and other soldiers in his company received news of their impending deployment to Iraq. Then, in May, Walz, the unit’s top noncommissioned officer, quit abruptly, leaving the unit without a clear head.
Thomas Behrends, who used to be in Walz’s unit and is now a retired command sergeant major in the Minnesota National Guard, said that he stepped in to fight in Iraq while Walz stayed home and ran for office. He did this for almost two years.
“I thought, for the love of God, what kind of leadership is it if this guy quits and I refuse to do it?” In 2022, Behrends told Alpha News. “What does it mean to the 500 people who work in that factory if the company says it’s going to send troops to Iraq, but the manager says he’s not going?”
Walz’s departure in May 2005 is also not ideal because it is not quite four years, but more than two full years short of a six-year service.
Alpha News, which supposedly looked at Walz’s Report of Separation and Military Service form, says that when he re-enlisted in September 2001, Walz promised to serve for six years. This implies that Walz’s contract with the Army National Guard won’t conclude until September 2007.
It appeared that Walz was going against the paper when he stated that he had worked for four years before retiring in 2005.
Then, after 20 years of service, Walz re-enlisted to serve his country for another four years after September 11. In 2006, he wrote in the Winona Daily News that he retired the year before his company’s deployment to Iraq to prepare for his congressional campaign.
Wald’s claim in his campaign materials that he left as a command sergeant major was false. Not true.
In addition, Walz seems to have lied about the rank he held when he retired. According to photos shared by Alpha News, he actually received a promotion to the rank of Command Sergeant Major a few weeks before his retirement, and he has boasted on campaign websites about leaving with that rank.
“When he was a congressman, he just sat there.” Behrends said, “He was proud that he was a former command sergeant major and the most powerful person in the House ever.”
Of course, Walz never completed the training or courses necessary to become a command sergeant major at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. Additionally, they later altered his release papers to reflect his departure as a master sergeant, rather than a command sergeant major.
The National Guard told reporters that Walz could use the rank of command sergeant major, but he couldn’t say that he left with it.
“In his campaign materials, Wald lied when he said he left as a command sergeant major. Someone who used to be a company sergeant in the Minnesota Army National Guard said, “That’s not true.”
“Tim Walz saw his rank drop to master sergeant, which is why he will get retirement pay for that.”
Behrends went even further. His words were firm: “It’s really stolen honor.” “I don’t know anyone else who has done that.”
