That Joe Biden has presided over a record influx of illegal immigration throughout his presidency even the most die-hard Democrats in the press can no longer deny. So in a thinly veiled attempt to salvage the party’s prospects with Kamala Harris as the newly installed presidential nominee, the media has carefully rewritten the record, claiming that the vice president was not actually the border czar, but rather that Biden put her in charge of specifically addressing the root causes of illegal immigration from the Northern Triangle. Unfortunately for Harris, even by the specific metrics of migration from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, her more narrowly defined tenure as border czar was still a complete and total failure.
Border crossings of citizens from Northern Triangle nations began Donald Trump’s presidency at 162,891 in fiscal 2017 and ended at 106,762 crossings in fiscal 2020. Border Patrol then recorded an explosion of 701,049 crossings by migrants from the Northern Triangle in fiscal 2021. Crossings from the three countries have somewhat abated to about 500,000 in fiscal 2022, fiscal 2023, and the past 12 months ending in June 2024, which saw 548,596. But that’s still around a 400% increase in illegal immigration from the only three countries Harris was specifically tasked to tackle.

If Harris is as important to the overall administration as Biden claims she is, then his overall record on immigration matters as much to her campaign as her specific failure over the Northern Triangle countries. Compared to the 500,000 illegal immigrants who entered the country on average each year under Trump, Biden has presided over an average annual influx of more than 2 million illegal immigrants, and that doesn’t include the potential millions missed by Border Patrol and other local law enforcement. So both overall border crossings and specifically illegal immigration of citizens from the Northern Triangle have roughly quadrupled under the Biden-Harris administration. She didn’t perform any worse than the White House’s broader border brouhaha, but she didn’t perform any better either.
