A look at the compelling rivalries that will shape the Paris Olympics
In the literal sense, the Olympics got underway a couple days ago, with rugby sevens, women’s soccer, handball and archery having kicked off already.
In the grander sense, however, the Olympics kicks off Friday with the Opening Ceremony in Paris — a made-for-TV moment (📺 1:30 p.m. ET, replay at 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC) that will include the parade of nations taking athletes down the River Seine in the first opening ceremony held outside a stadium.
The idea is to showcase the city of Paris with the ceremony starting at the Austerlitz Bridge and landing at the Trocadero, with the Louvre and the Notre Dame cathedral in between. That idea also envelops the venues for these games, which include a series of temporary stadiums that will put the city’s landmarks on display.
Lady Gaga and Celine Dion are both in Paris, and there is speculation that they will perform.
