Gov. Tina Kotek (D-OR) announced she will not expand the role of first lady within government in the Beaver State, after scrutiny over her plans to do so.

Kotek’s plans to expand Oregon first lady Aimee Kotek Wilson were found in emails released by the governor’s office last week in compliance with a public records request, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. The plans to expand Kotek Wilson’s role into having an office caused concern by several aides in the governor’s office and was reportedly behind the exit of three of Kotek’s top aides earlier this year.

In a lengthy statement issued on Wednesday, Kotek flatly said there would be no “office of the first spouse” created.

“After listening to and reflecting on the concerns of Oregonians who have contacted my office, as well as the advice of staff, I want to be clear about these things: There will not be an Office of the First Spouse. There will not be a position of Chief of Staff to the First Spouse,” Kotek said.

“Other than staff that is assigned to support the First Lady in her official duties, no state staff will report to her or be supervised by her,” she added.

The governor also said she will be “assembling a First Spouse Manual to spell out policies and procedures related to that role, including protocols for addressing any staff concerns or complaints.”

Some of the concerns mounted around Kotek’s reported plans to expand the first lady’s role came from a previous scandal with an Oregon governor which led to his resignation.

Former Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber resigned in 2015 after accusations that he and then-first lady Cylvia Hayes used their positions for personal gain. Kitzhaber denied any wrongdoing, but resigned and was later not charged by the Justice Department.
