In an increasingly desperate attempt to win over voters to his style of centrist neo-liberalism in the next legislative elections, Emmanuel Macron has threatened to unleash a “civil war” in France.
Choosing to support the leftist-socialist New Popular Front or the populist National Rally would result in a “civil war,” according to Macron, who also criticized “those who follow them” in the leadership of the two major opposition groups.
According to Le Figaro, the beleaguered French president warned that the “response of the extreme right” to the country’s current issues would cause insecurity “because it refers to a people’s religion or origin, which is what pushes them to civil war.” In the snap elections he called, his party is currently trailing in third place.
Macron, however, asserted that the program of La France Insoumise (LFI), the left-wing party leading the New Popular Front coalition, advocates a type of “communitarianism” that he claimed also has a “civil war” component.
Gabriel Attal, the prime minister, who is 35 years old, echoed Macron’s exaggerated remarks on Monday, saying that “La France Insoumise drives the National Rally, and then the National Rally feeds La France Insoumise using speeches of hatred and stigmatization, which feed off each other.”
“Some people in our nation harbor hate, violent inclinations, and the desire to harm particular French communities or individuals. The triumph of the extremes would most likely free these urges and possibly result in violence.”
Jordan Bardella, the National Rally president and the populist party’s nominee for prime minister in the upcoming snap legislative elections, declared that unrest was already a hallmark of Macron’s presidency but added that the country was at risk from Macron’s vehement rhetoric.
Bardella referred to the racially motivated riots that erupted across France in the previous year following the shooting of an Algerian teenager by police as he attempted to elude arrest. Weeks of BLM-like rioting followed the shooting, resulting in over 1,300 people being detained, over 800 police officers being injured, over 5,000 automobiles being set on fire, and over $1 billion in damages.
“They are the ones who fear the French!” declared Bardella. June marks a year since the riots that rocked France’s cities and villages. I wish to address a request for power. That is not something a president of the republic should say.
