Several state governors have placed National Guard troops on standby ahead of potential unrest in response to the results of Tuesday’s presidential election results, including in the pivotal battleground state of Nevada.
Washington Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat, announced Friday that some members of the state’s National Guard will be on standby due to concerns of election-related violence. Left-wing Oregon Governor Tina Kotek did the same after ballot boxes were targeted by arson attacks in each of the Pacific Northwest states.
In Vancouver, Washington, a ballot box in Fisher’s Landing was completely torched by a suspected arsonist last Monday. Another ballot box was targeted in Portland, Oregon that same day, though most of the ballots were saved as a result of built-in fire suppression technology.

Federal investigators with the FBI are now leading the investigation into the two fires, which are believed to be linked to another attempted arson attack in Vancouver earlier this month. Voters who were potentially affected in the fires have been instructed to track their ballots online and to inform their local auditor’s office if a replacement ballot is required.
According to a report from the New York Times, a “Free Gaza” message was found on each of the incendiary devices recovered from the targeted ballot boxes. The New York Post further reported that a letter was recovered from a ballot box about 15 minutes away from the Fisher’s Landing location.
“Based upon general and specific information and concerns regarding the potential for violence or other unlawful activity related to the 2024 general election, I want to ensure we are fully prepared to respond to any potential additional civil unrest,” Inslee said when announcing the activation of National Guard assets. The US Department of Homeland Security has warned that threats to “election infrastructure” remain high, he added.
In recent years, National Guard troops have been activated in a number of states ahead of Election Day, primarily to deal with election-related cyber threats. The Colorado National Guard’s Cyber Task Force has been activated every year since 2018, and will once again be active for the 2024 Election, the office of Colorado’s secretary of state announced in a statement last month.
In the battleground state of Nevada, Republican Governor Joe Lombardo announced that 60 National Guard troops will be on standby “in preparation for a safe and smooth Election Day.”
“This decision, which mirrors the state’s routine preparation for past elections, was made after consultation with election officials and state leaders,” the governor said in a statement. “It is one of many proactive steps the state is taking to ensure all possible resources are in place for a timely response to any challenges that arise.”
The activated troops will support state and local law enforcement assets on Election Day, the statement continued.
Three law enforcement associations representing agencies from across the country – the Major County Sheriffs of America, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and the Major Cities Chiefs Association – said in a joint statement last month that preparations for Election Day security have been underway for more than a year.
“As always, the associations encourage the public to speak up if they witness anything suspicious or unusual with election activities,” the statement said. “If you ‘See Something, Say Something’, and let law enforcement investigate and determine the outcome of any suspicious circumstances or incidents.”
