Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has recently come under fire, where some have alleged he has committed “election interference” after comments about voting during a recent segment.  Commentators online have alleged that there is a double standard, given that conservatives have been criminally punished for similar conduct.

Speaking about the election, Kimmel said during a recent taping of his show, “I don’t know if you guys know about this, but we have an election coming up on I feel pretty relaxed about it. I’ve really been enjoying the week. It’s in times like these. It’s important to remember that cannabis is legal in our state.”  However, critics have honed in on one specific sentence in which Kimmel appeared to give directives on how Trump supporters should vote.

“You can’t vote early vote on time if you want to vote for Trump, vote late vote, very late voting on Thursday or maybe Friday,” Kimmel said.  He added, “This will be my third time voting against Donald Trump, fifth, if you count the two times he was nominated for an Emmy or reality show. According to a new poll from CNN, only 30% of American voters think if he loses trouble conceived would give them that idea to be losing the election, he still hasn’t and conceded the last election.”

As background, pro-Trump social media influencer Douglass Mackey was convicted for alleged “election interference” and sentenced to prison over sharing memes on social media.  Mackey had shared a meme, joking and instructing supporters of Hillary Clinton that they could vote for her in the 2016 election via posting on social media.

Reacting to Kimmel’s statement, Libs of TikTok wrote on X, “Jimmy Kimmel instructs viewers that if they’re voting for Trump they should vote late like Thursday or Friday. Wasn’t Douglass Mackey sentenced to prison for doing something similar? Will @TheJusticeDept investigate Jimmy Kimmel?” Other users on social media reacted with similar sentiment.

One person wrote in the comments section, “You’re absolutely right to point that out. Douglass Mackey was indeed sentenced for something very similar, and it highlights a clear double standard.When someone on the left jokes or misleads about voting, it’s brushed off as “comedy,” but when it’s done by anyone on the right, it’s treated as a crime.  This double standard in applying the law is exactly why so many Americans feel the deck is stacked. If we want real fairness, the same rules should apply to everyone.”

Others called out the apparent “2-tiered justice system” that Republicans have been subjected to in recent years.  “There’s a 2 tiered justice system. Of course they won’t charge Kimmel. He’ll say it was a joke and claim the 1st Admendment. Meanwhile Mackey also posted funny memes as jokes and he wasn’t allowed that defense. It’s always (D) ifferent,” another user said.

Suggesting bias within the federal government, another person wrote, “Of course not. Kimmel is targeting Trump voters, so anything goes. Mackey targeted Hillary Clinton voters, so he needed to go to jail. See how it works? The DOJ is effectively a cog in the Dem machine.”
