As the 2024 presidential race heads into its final days, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign strategy has come under scrutiny, with recent revelations indicating her campaign is running targeted advertisements tailored vastly differently for Jewish and Arab American audiences in key swing states.
According to a CNN investigation, the Harris campaign is employing micro targeted ads in Pennsylvania and Michigan—two critical states where undecided voters could tip the balance.
Harris’s Pennsylvania ads, aimed at Jewish voters, prominently feature her stance on Israel. A Facebook advertisement showcases footage from her speech at a Democratic National Committee event, where she vocally supports “Israel’s right to defend itself.” This messaging shows her “alignment” with pro-Israel sentiment, a topic of particular interest to Pennsylvania’s Jewish population as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to dominate international headlines.
“And let me be clear,” Harris said in the ad featured in Pennsylvania. “I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself, and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on October 7, including unspeakable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival.”
“Know this, I will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and our interests against Iran and Iran-backed terrorists,” she finished. However, omitted from the ads are two sections of her speech that underscored the “suffering” in Gaza, which she described as “heartbreaking.”
Meanwhile, according to CNN, ads designed for Michigan audiences, particularly the state’s large Arab American population, focus on Harris’s concern for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. One ad aimed at Michigan voters highlights Harris’s commitment to “not be silent about the human suffering occurring in Gaza.”
“What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating,” Harris states in the ad. “Our common humanity compels us to act,” another one of her speeches is quoted in the ad for Michigan.
The Democratic Party has struggled to maintain unity amid diverging views on Israel and Palestine. The internal divide has been visible in recent debates and public statements from party officials, with Harris’s messaging potentially widening the rift further as she attempts to court these specific voting blocs. Michigan, home to one of the largest Arab American communities in the country, plays a pivotal role in securing her pathway to the White House.
A recent poll by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) indicates Vice President Harris faces declining support among Muslim voters, a critical demographic in battleground states like Michigan. In the poll, Green Party candidate Jill Stein has 42.3% of the Muslim vote, slightly ahead of Harris at 41%, suggesting a shift that may affect the Democratic stronghold in Michigan. The decline in support for Harris among this traditionally Democratic group is influenced by dissatisfaction with U.S. policies on Gaza, a key concern for Muslim voters.
