The 2024 Jets season died Sunday night in Foxborough, Mass., succumbing to a battle with under-performance after it was left weakened by over-expectations. It was just eight games old.
Time of death was called at 4:02 p.m., when a 25-22 loss to the Patriots was sealed and a familiar bones collector appeared. Pat Patriot — that wide-mouthed mascot in the clunky boots — still is patrolling Gillette Stadium for corpses even after longtime Jets nemeses Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have moved on.
No amount of impassioned speeches, hired guns like the dismayed Davante Adams and the tone-deaf Haason Reddick, or smiles flashed by Aaron Rodgers in his last-ditch attempt to bring more “joy” to a tense locker room could save The Season from reaching a 2-6 record and meeting the same fate as so many of its Jets’ ancestors.
The Season actually was a do-over for 2023, when the Jets were supposed to break through as Super Bowl contenders before Rodgers’ torn Achilles scrapped all plans after just four snaps.
