With Election Day less than two weeks away, Vice President Kamala Harris has faced some tough moments in interviews since her big media push. In back-to-back appearances on NBC News and Telemundo, Harris struggled to clearly articulate her policies, particularly in areas related to immigration and the economy.

During an interview with Telemundo’s Julio Vaqueiro, the conversation quickly turned to immigration—a pressing issue in the 2024 election. Vaqueiro opened the discussion by highlighting the Democratic Party’s apparent shift away from advocating for a “pathway to citizenship,” calling it “mass amnesty.” He began, “Democrats aren’t talking about a ‘pathway to citizenship’ anymore.” Harris jumped in: “I am! I am talking about it!”

The exchange continued to focus on deportations, with Vaqueiro pressing, “We’re talking about mass deportations.” Harris stumbled slightly before replying, “I’m not talking about…” but trailed off as Vaqueiro pushed again: “What’s your stance there?” Harris finally stated, “Mass amnesty.”

On NBC News, Harris was asked about her economic strategy. Host Hallie Jackson cited a recent NBC News poll that found more Americans feel the Biden administration’s policies have hurt rather than helped them. Harris’s response was filled with pauses and repeated phrases. “First of all, let me be very clear, mine will not be a continuation of the Biden administration,” she insisted, trying to distance herself from President Joe Biden’s record. “I am very clear, cost of groceries [is] still too high. The voters know it, I know it.”

However, Harris’s explanation was punctuated with repeated words and phrases, making her message difficult to follow. At one point, she emphasized, “The example is what I’m going to do to expand the child tax credit because, listen, young parents in particular, they need help.” Despite her efforts to elaborate on her policies, Harris seemed to struggle with staying on message.

The NBC interview took another turn when Harris addressed the contrast between her economic plan and Trump’s, claiming that her proposals would strengthen the economy, while his would lead to higher inflation and potential recession. “Economists from Nobel laureates to Goldman Sachs have reviewed my economic plan versus Donald Trump’s and… in comparison, have found that my plans will strengthen America’s economy,” she claimed.

“Why do you think that’s not landing with voters?” Jackson asked.

Despite being interviewed by what many consider to be “friendly” networks, Harris’s faltering delivery could hinder efforts to build momentum. Throughout this year, economic confidence in the U.S. has remained low, significantly influencing voters as they consider the economy the most critical issue in determining their choice for president.

In a recent Gallup poll, Donald Trump is favored over Kamala Harris on the economy, with 54% supporting Trump’s handling of the issue compared to 45% for Harris. Trump also leads in areas such as immigration, where he has a 9-point advantage, and foreign affairs, with a 5-point lead. Conversely, Harris outperforms Trump on environmental issues with a significant 26-point lead, on abortion rights by 16 points, and on healthcare by 10 points. On gun policy, the candidates are viewed as equally capable by voters, reflecting the American electorate’s divided stance on the hot-button issue.
