In a rapidly evolving narrative, The Atlantic’s recent attempt to paint Donald Trump as a callous figure indifferent to military service and sacrifice was met with strong rebuttals, fresh facts, and a renewed show of support for the former president.

The hit piece, published on Tuesday just ahead of the 2024 presidential election, claimed that Trump showed disdain for U.S. military personnel, with quotes attributed to unnamed sources alleging that Trump admired Hitler’s generals for their loyalty. However, one of the most shocking claims—that Trump reacted with indifference to the murder of U.S. Army Specialist Vanessa Guillén.

The tragic story of Vanessa Guillén, who was brutally murdered at Fort Hood in 2020, remains a source of deep pain for her family and a rallying point for accountability within the U.S. military. Guillén’s killer, Army Specialist Aaron Robinson, was aided by Cecily Aguilar, who was convicted for her role in covering up the murder.

On August 14, 2023, Aguilar received the maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison for her actions, including making false statements to federal investigators and destroying evidence related to Guillén’s murder. The Guillén family had expressed their gratitude for the justice achieved, while simultaneously condemning any political manipulation of Vanessa’s death.

However, on Tuesday ‘The Atlantic’ reported:

Trump became angry. “It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a fucking Mexican!” He turned to his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and issued an order: “Don’t pay it!” Later that day, he was still agitated. “Can you believe it?” he said, according to a witness. “F*cking people, trying to rip me off.”

Just hours after The Atlantic’s piece went live, Vanessa’s sister, Mayra Guillén, took to social media to denounce the politicization of her sister’s murder, tweeting: “My sister’s death was never to be politicized. Unbelievable.”

“Wow. I don’t appreciate how you are exploiting my sister’s death for politics- hurtful & disrespectful to the important changes she made for service members,” she wrote in a separate post. “President Donald Trump did nothing but show respect to my family & Vanessa. In fact, I voted for President Trump today.”

She also retweeted a statement from Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. “I was in the discussions featured in the Atlantic’s latest hit piece against President Trump. Let me say this. Any suggestion that President Trump disparaged Ms. Guillen or refused to pay for her funeral expenses is absolutely false,” Meadows wrote. “He was nothing but kind, gracious, and wanted to make sure that the military and the U.S. government did right by Vanessa Guillen and her family.”

In late July 2020, President Trump met with Guillén’s family at the White House to discuss the circumstances surrounding her death and the family’s pursuit of justice. During this meeting, President Trump expressed his condolences and pledged support for the family’s efforts, stating, “We are going to look into it very powerfully… Maybe something can come out of it that will help Vanessa and others.” He also offered assistance with Guillén’s funeral expenses CBS News reported at the time.

Trump assured Guillén’s family during their White House meeting that her death would not be “swept under the rug,” as reported by the White House pool.
