The once powerful Harvey Weinstein who is currently locked up inside New York’s Rikers Island awaiting a retrial in a 2022 sexual assault case has cancer.

According to reports confirming the diagnosis from multiple outlets, Weinstein’s own representatives finally confirmed the rumors that the once acclaimed filmmaker has been diagnosed with a rare bone cancer.

While it is unclear what the prognosis is, the New York Post reports that a representative for Weinstein initially called the rumors of a health situation “speculationbefore ultimately confirming the diagnosis.

Weinstein, 72, who is awaiting a second trial on sex crimes charges, was diagnosed in the past month, sources say. It’s unclear what his prognosis is, or how it will affect the legal proceedings against him.

A representative for the former producer first denied the diagnosis when reached by The Post Monday night before condemning “speculation” around his health status.

“Craig Rothfeld, Mr. Weinstein’s authorized legal healthcare representative in New York State, expresses profound dismay at the speculation surrounding Mr. Weinstein’s medical condition,” the rep said in a statement. “It is both troubling and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discourse. Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment.”

Considering the nature of the crimes Weinstein has been charged and convicted of (although one 2020 conviction has been overturned on appeal), it is no wonder that the response online has been something other than empathy or heartfelt condolences.

Weinstein has been hit with multiple health issues recently, including heart surgery, Covid, and Pneumonia.  According to NBC News, he is undergoing treatment where he is currently being held at Rikers Island in New York.

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood mogul whose alleged sexual misconduct fueled the #MeToo movement and who was recently indicted on new charges, has chronic myeloid leukemia, two sources told NBC News.

The sources added that Weinstein is undergoing treatment in prison at Rikers Island in New York. Chronic myeloid leukemia is an uncommon form of cancer of the bone marrow, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Weinstein’s health issues come amid his legal battle with Manhattan prosecutors over their efforts to combine his original 2020 sexual crimes with a new criminal indictment. Prosecutors have sought to consolidate the new charges with the ones previously brought against Weinstein so they could be tried in court together.

Weinstein’s New York conviction was overturned this year as he was serving a 23-year sentence. New York’s Court of Appeals found that the judge in the landmark trial prejudiced Weinstein with improper rulings, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case.

But Weinstein did not walk free after the court’s decision because he was convicted in 2022 of rape in Los Angeles and sentenced to 16 years in prison. His legal team is appealing that conviction.

This is a developing story, with details currently unknown about the prognosis or stage of the cancer, reportedly a bone cancer that is fairly rare according to the Mayo Clinic:

Chronic myelogenous leukemia, also called CML, is an uncommon type of cancer of the bone marrow. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. CML causes an increased number of white blood cells in the blood.

Advances in treatment have improved the prognosis of people with chronic myelogenous leukemia. Most people can achieve remission and live for many years after diagnosis.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia often doesn’t cause symptoms. It might be detected during a blood test.

When they occur, symptoms may include:

Bone pain.
Bleeding easily.
Feeling full after eating a small amount of food.
Fatigue.
Fever.
Weight loss without trying.
Loss of appetite.
Pain or fullness below the ribs on the left side.
Excessive sweating during sleep.
Blurry vision caused by bleeding in the back of the eye.

At this time it is unknown whether his diagnosis will have any impact on his appeal or incarceration.  We will bring you updates as we have them.
