Ever since Vem Miller was found in the vicinity of Donald Trump with a small arsenal of weapons, some of us have been wondering how he wound up being cut loose on his own recognizance. To be sure, plenty of investigations have taken place into all of these events. House hearings have concluded that these events marked "one of the greatest law enforcement failures" on record. So why has it been so hard to pin down the point of failure? To answer that, perhaps we need to look a bit more closely at the Vem Miller arrest, which was determined not to have been an assassination attempt because Trump wasn't shot. (National Review)

The House task force investigating the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump in July released a scathing report Monday detailing law enforcement’s planning failures and the communication breakdown leading up to the shooting.

Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, fired eight shots at Trump and his supporters during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa from an American Glass Research building near the stage where Trump spoke.

Crooks shot Trump’s right ear, leading the former president to famously pump his fist and chant “fight!” in the face of violence. Crooks also shot and killed former fire chief Corey Comperatore and wounded two others.

Unfortunately, someone mentioned to the authorities that the Secret Service had been in contact with the local police, leading to questions as to how well-informed the SS had been, Now let's look at the Vem Miller arrest. Are we to believe that it's only an assassination attempt if Trump actually gets shot? That's certainly what they're making it sound like.

The FBI has not determined a motive for Crooks’s attack, although he did research Trump and other public figures extensively beforehand.

If you show up near the President with a bag full of weapons, I would argue that motive immediately becomes a secondary consideration,
