Over 1 million votes have been cast in Georgia, less than a week after early voting began.
The milestone comes after voters in the battleground cast 328,000 ballots Tuesday, crushing the state’s previous first early voting record. On Friday, state election officials announced the passing of the million vote threshold.
“We have done it! We crossed the 1,000,000 voter mark at around 11:50 a.m. Amazing turnout! So happy for the counties and the voters! Let’s keep it going,” Gabe Sterling, the chief operating officer for the Georgia secretary of state, said on X.
As of Saturday, 1.26 million voters have turned out for early voting, according to the Georgia secretary of state’s website. About 7 million registered voters are in the state, meaning 17% have cast their vote.
Georgia, which carries 16 electoral votes, is one of seven swing states that could make or break former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris’ White House dreams. President Biden narrowly won the state by 11,000 votes in 2020, breaking a three-decade drought for Democrats in the Peach State.
Mr. Biden’s victory there helped fuel Mr. Trump’s claims of widespread fraud in the election.
Now the former president has a 2-point lead over Ms. Harris in Georgia, according to RealClearPolling.
