A study of people who support immigration says that if “President” Kamala Harris keeps President Joe Biden’s policies, she could bring in almost four million migrants next year and 12.3 million migrants over the course of her four years in office.
The study from the Brookings Institution, which is funded by businesses, says that the huge and disruptive influx of migrants will only add one cent to annual economic growth for every $10.
The report says, “We expect net immigration to be much higher under a Harris administration than a second Trump administration.” It then goes on to describe four possible outcomes:
“Net migration in the Harris, high scenario is 3.7 million in 2025 and cumulates to 12.3 million from 2025–2028.”
“The Trump scenario leads to net negative migration, which is different from the other scenarios. About -740,000 people will move away in 2025, and 230,000 will leave in 2026. Net movement over the past four years adds up to about 410,000 people.”
“One legal, illegal, almost legal, or temporary immigrant would be born in the United States for every baby born there in 2025. So far, Harris’s team has made it clear that she will keep the policies that Biden put in place to encourage immigration.”
Overall, the study says Harris’s policies on letting a lot of people come to the U.S. would add 15 million people to the population, or about 3 million new households, over her four years in office.
The rules for legal immigration set by Congress in 1990, on the other hand, would allow almost five million more people to move to the US under Trump’s plans. The study says that Trump’s focus on the American people will make the economy shrink by four cents for every ten dollars in 2025.
The report doesn’t talk about how average Americans’ wages and salaries are projected to go up in a national labor market. It also doesn’t talk about how house prices will go down once migrants leave, which will help families and birthrates. It also doesn’t take into account the expected benefits to the government from less diversity in the US, less harm to countries that send migrants, and less chaos and death in migration south of the border.
