Commuters will have a long list of do’s and don’t’s when it comes to catching public transport. And one of the most common habits people get annoyed about relates to those who put their dirty feet up on chairs. 

Many call out the behavior as ‘selfish’ each time it’s witnessed, which is why a recent post shared in a thread on Reddit has blown up. 

A $296 fine for common habit

A Melbourne commuter took to the social media platform to vent their frustration over a fine they received over a “little-known rule”. 

“Fined $296 for having a foot on the edge of a train seat,” the post read.  

“I’m not paying this wtf. How do I get out of this fine? Metro is a joke.” 

The problem was, the joke was on the passenger and the “little-known” rule was in fact, very well known, leaving few people on their side. 

Many people chimed in to the person’s vent claiming that they got what they deserved for the dirty habit. 

“So you put your dirty feet on a train seat. Got fined for it. But you’re blaming the metro?” one puzzled person asked. 

“The joke here is that you thought the signs meant everyone but you would be fined for having feet on seats,” another insisted. 

“Well well well, if it isn’t the consequences of your actions!” said another. 

And another person questioned: “What about this are you objecting to?”

A harsh lesson? 

Meanwhile, others could see how the fine would sting but were hopeful that the commuter learnt their lesson from the infringement. 

“There are signs around telling you 🤷‍♀️ It’s a lot of money which sucks but you did the wrong thing, you pay. That’s how it works man. Live and learn,” someone said. 

“Won’t do that again will ya,” another person chimed in. 

And another agreed: “That’s too much money but I think like everyone here – putting dirty feet on clean seats needs to stop. It’s just a bit rude.”

While passengers highlighted that the metro carriages clearly mention no feet on seats in Melbourne, Transport NSW also insists that it’s common courtesy and good etiquette to do so.
