Spanish scientists claim Christopher Colombus was a Sephardic Jew from Western Europe.

Scientists in a new documentary titled “Columbus DNA: The True Origin” claim they were able to test samples of Columbus’s DNA from his remains at Seville Cathedral in Spain.

After conducting DNA analysis, the scientists compared the DNA to some of Colombus’ relatives and concluded he was a Sephardic Jew.

A new DNA study on the 500-year-old remains of Christopher Columbus has found that the controversial explorer was actually a Sephardic Jew from western Europe.

Spanish researchers announced their findings in a new documentary, titled Columbus DNA: The true origin, which aired on Spain’s national broadcaster TVE. Since 2003, scientists have ​​tested samples of remains buried at Seville Cathedral in Spain, believed to be the final resting place of the 15th-century explorer.

In the documentary, Jose Antonio Lorente, a professor of forensic medicine, who led the research at the University of Granada, said his analysis revealed that Columbus’s DNA was “compatible” with his being of Jewish origin.

Throughout the 21-year investigation, DNA experts compared samples of the remains with those of Columbus’s known relatives and descendants. “We have DNA from Christopher Columbus, very partial, but sufficient. We have DNA from Fernando Colon, his son,” Professor Lorente said, per CNN. “And both in the Y chromosome (male) and in the mitochondrial DNA (transmitted by the mother) of Fernando, there are traits compatible with Jewish origin.”

This may be new to people who do not know Sephardic or European Jewish history.

The 15th-century explorer Christopher Columbus was a Sephardic Jew from Western Europe, Spanish scientists said on Saturday, after using DNA analysis to tackle a centuries-old mystery.

Several countries have argued over the origins and the final burial place of the divisive figure who led Spanish-funded expeditions from the 1490s onward, opening the way for the European conquest of the Americas.

Many historians have questioned the traditional theory that Columbus came from Genoa, Italy. Other theories range from him being a Spanish Jew or a Greek, to Basque, Portuguese or British.

To solve the mystery researchers conducted a 22-year investigation, led by forensic expert Miguel Lorente, by testing tiny samples of remains buried in Seville Cathedral, long marked by authorities there as the last resting place of Columbus, though there had been rival claims.

They compared them with those of known relatives and descendants and their findings were announced in a documentary titled “Columbus DNA: The true origin” on Spain’s national broadcaster TVE on Saturday.

“We have DNA from Christopher Columbus, very partial, but sufficient. We have DNA from Hernando Colón, his son,” Lorente said in the programme.

The study confirmed this Jewish origin with the YDNA and mtDNA of his son, Hernando. First of all, mtDNA is inherited maternally, so it is not relevant to Chris. Secondly, how has YDNA confirmed he is Jewish? Did they do a specific clade analysis? It is not specified…
