INDIA joins the U.S. and several EU countries in refusing to sign letter condemning Israel for banning UN Secretary General from entering the country

India didn’t sign a letter supported by 104 countries and the African Union, which criticized Israel for declaring United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres persona non grata in Israel for allegedly siding with Iran and Hamas.

The WIRE Earlier this month, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced that Guterres had been declared persona non grata and barred from entering Israeli territory because he did not “unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack” and did not “denounce the massacre and sexual atrocities committed by Hamas murderers on October 7.” “Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel, as nearly all the countries of the world have done, does not deserve to set foot on Israeli soil,” Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said at the time.

At a meeting of the UN Security Council, Guterres pointed out that he had always strongly condemned Iran’s missile attack on Israel. After UNSC members expressed their support for Guterres, the secretary general’s spokesperson said that they saw the announcement as a “political statement by the Foreign Minister”.

The South American state of Chile led an initiative to gather signatures from UN member states for a letter in support of Guterres. “We, the member states signatories to this letter, express our deep concern with and condemnation of the recent statement from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel declaring the Secretary-General persona non grata. Such actions undermine the United Nations’ ability to carry out its mandate, which includes mediating conflicts and providing humanitarian support,” the letter stated.

While the United States and several European nations did not sign the letter, India’s absence was particularly notable – as it had always accorded significant importance to the United Nations.

RP Singh, a spokesman for Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), issued a statement following the attack saying Hamas “has hijacked the Gaza strip and is worse than ISIS. They started it so we can’t say people from both sides have been killed.”

It is not a war between two countries,” Singh declared. “The way it has happened and done on the ground, children are killed and put in cages, and hostages have been taken up. Who has died, and who are the sufferers? Israelis.”

“The Indians always remind us that Israel was there for them during the Kargil War,” Carmon told YNet. “Israel was one of the few countries that stood by them and provided them with weapons. The Indians don’t forget this and might now be returning the favor.”

India’s lack of support for jihad prompted Iran’s “supreme leader,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to declare India an “enemy of Islam” in a statement in September.

The Hindu observed that some of India’s closest allies, including BRICS partners China and Russia, signed the letter, as well as European states including France and Switzerland.
