A first-of-its-kind national survey on the youth transgender boom found that 3.3% of U.S. high school students describe themselves as transgender, while 2.2% said they are questioning their gender identity.

Nearly two-thirds of those who identified as transgender or questioned their gender were biological girls, according to results from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which were published Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The 2023 survey of about 20,000 students at public and private schools “presents the first nationally representative prevalence estimates of transgender identity and questioning transgender identity among U.S. high school students,” said the CDC.

The data also revealed a racial disparity: A higher proportion of White students identified as transgender than Black students. Most students — 94.5% — did not identify as transgender or questioning.

The survey comes with concerns surging about how to accommodate the growing number of students who identify as the opposite sex in sex-segregated areas such as restrooms, locker rooms, athletics and rooming assignments on field trips.

The data also reignited debate over whether the students who identify as transgender are genuinely suffering from gender dysphoria and should receive potentially irreversible medical treatment or are seeking to solve their behavioral and mental health problems by bowing to social pressure to change their gender.

“This explosion is driven by a social media contagion and woke classrooms pushing kids into it,” said Gays Against Groomers, which opposes gender-identity “indoctrination and medicalization” in children, on X. “The data also shows that this is a mental health crisis.”

Indeed, the study showed that 26% of transgender and “questioning” students had attempted suicide in the last year compared with 5% of non-transgender male students and 11% of non-transgender female students.

“Transgender and questioning students experienced a higher prevalence of violence, poor mental health, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and unstable housing, and a lower prevalence of school connectedness than their cisgender peers,” said the report.

It recommended that schools “create safer and more supportive environments for transgender and questioning students.”

“The findings of this report suggest that more effort is necessary to ensure that the health and well-being of youths who are socially marginalized is prioritized,” it said.

A 2022 study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law found that about 1.6% of youth ages 13-17, or about 300,000, identified as transgender.
