Ryan Wesley Routh on Monday pleaded not guilty to charges related to his alleged attempt to assassinate Donald Trump earlier this month at his Florida golf course.
According to CNN, Routh, 58, appeared in federal court in Fort Pierce, Florida, pleading not guilty to the five charges he faces in connection with the alleged attempt. Routh appeared in prison clothes and told the judge that he understood the charges against him.
Routh’s attorneys asked in the hearing for a jury trial. The request was accepted by Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, Fox News reported. Routh was denied bail in a hearing last week, being deemed a flight risk.
On September 15, Routh was arrested after Secret Service with Trump as he golfed stopped an alleged assassination attempt. Routh was said to have laid in wait for around 12 hours for the 2024 GOP presidential nominee.
A letter filed by prosecutors reportedly written by Routh offered $150,000 for "whomever can complete the job." The letter was left in a box and given to an unnamed witness "several months" before the September 15 foiled assassination at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course.
The witness reportedly only opened the box after learning of the attempt, and found it to contain the letter in question as well as ammunition and other letters.
Overseeing the case will be Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who oversaw the Biden-Harris DOJ’s Mar-a-Lago documents case against Trump. That case was thrown out in July.
