A pair of Arkansas parents have been arrested after, prosecutors allege, they tried to give away their baby boy in exchange for a six-pack of beer and $1,000.

Defendants Shalene Ehlers, 20, and Darien Urban, 21, have each been charged with endangering a minor and attempting to get compensation in exchange for a minor.

The two even signed an impromptu contract for the monetary exchange including a disclaimer that “there will be no changing y’all two’s minds and to never contact again” according to court documents. The signing of the contract was also recorded.

Ms. Ehlers and Mr. Urban are accused of handing over the baby to another resident of the Hide Away Campground in Rogers, Arkansas, Ricky Crawford, in exchange for the six-pack of beer on the night of Sept. 21, according to court documents.

Mr. Crawford, who was allegedly drunk that night, then brought the baby to another camper.

Witnesses from that camper told detectives that the baby had a rash, blisters, swelling around the butt and genitals and a full diaper at the time; the baby was changed and bathed by one of the witnesses.

Ms. Ehlers then returned to the second camper and spoke with Cody Martin, the other party in the exchange, and Mr. Crawford. Mr. Martin told detectives that Ms. Ehlers said that it was “not working having three dogs and a baby,” according to court documents.

Ms. Ehlers told Mr. Martin that she’d surrender the baby for $1,000, and went and got Mr. Urban when Mr. Martin said he’d need both parents to agree to go ahead with the exchange.

Mr. Martin then wrote up the contract and told Ms. Ehlers and Mr. Urban that he’d give them a cashier’s check for $1,000 on Monday.

After the contract was signed while the parties were recorded, Mr. Martin explained the situation to campground owner Dale Martyn, who called the police. The baby was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

He is now in the custody of the Arkansas Department of Human Services, prosecutors told Fort Smith, Arkansas, ABC affiliate KHBS-TV.

Mr. Urban was released from jail on a $5,000 bond on Tuesday; Ms. Ehlers remains in the Benton County Jail on $30,000 bail.
