In an unusual move on Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson bent the rules to push through a three-month stopgap bill.
This was done to avoid a government shutdown, passing with a 341-82 vote.
Johnson, lacking the necessary support from his own party, suspended the rules.
The rule is that a vote requires a two-thirds majority.
For some reason he was leaning on Democrats to get it passed.
The bill includes $231 million for the Secret Service to protect the 2024 presidential campaigns and other high-profile events but notably excludes the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote.
The bill now heads to the Senate, and then to Biden’s desk, with the September 30 deadline looming.
If this was such a great bill, why were the Republicans against it and why were Democrats for it?
I guess bending the rules is okay as long as money is on the line, right?

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a three-month stopgap bill to avert a government shutdown in 341-82 vote.
The bill included $231 million for the Secret Service “to carry out protective operations including the 2024 Presidential Campaign and National Special Security Events.”
The measure did not include the SAVE Act which requires proof of citizenship to register to vote.
House Speaker Mike Johnson suspended the rules which requires two-thirds support because he didn’t have the backing from Republicans.
The stopgap bill had to be passed with Democrat support.
The measure will head to the Senate and ultimately to Joe Biden’s desk on Wednesday evening ahead of the September 30 deadline.
