A 35-year-old man hiking in Montana’s Glacier National Park was injured by an attacking bear this week and walked over a mile for aid.

The onslaught happened Thursday on the park’s Highline Trail, GNP officials said in a release

The unnamed hiker and the rest of his party ran into the bear at the Grinnell Glacier Overlook trailhead. After the attack, other hikers and park rangers accompanied the injured man to Granite Park Chalet.

The man, whose injuries weren’t life-threatening, eventually went by ambulance to a hospital in Whitefish.

Park officials didn’t specify the nature of the man’s injuries, nor have they determined what type of bear attacked him. Glacier National Park has black and grizzly bears.

A section of the Highline Trail, from Haystack Butte to Granite Park Chalet, is closed until further notice, GNP officials said.
