A federal judge in Delaware agreed Thursday to delay Hunter Biden’s sentencing on federal gun charges by three weeks, scheduling it for Dec. 4.
President Biden’s son was set to be sentenced after the election, with his original date scheduled for Nov. 13. Hunter’s attorneys had asked the court to delay sentencing because it overlapped with his other legal cases.
U.S. District Judge Maryellen Norieka agreed to the request in a brief order that didn’t explain her reasoning. Special counsel David Weiss had opposed pushing back the sentencing date.
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell asked for the delay because Hunter Biden faces a pretrial conference in a civil lawsuit on Nov. 12 and a Dec. 16 sentencing hearing for his federal tax case in California. Mr. Lowell said he was stretched thin because he was representing him in both matters.
Hunter Biden will be sentenced on three felony gun charges after a Delaware jury convicted him on all three counts in June. He was found guilty of two charges related to his lying about his drug use on a federal form when purchasing a revolver and illegally possessing the gun while being addicted to drugs.
The gun charges carry a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines, but he’s a first-time offender so he’ll likely receive a less severe punishment. The president has said he won’t pardon his son or commute a sentence.
