According to a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, significantly more independent voters view Republican nominee Donald Trump favorably than they do Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
The poll also found that while Trump’s favorability rating among all voters surveyed improved since last month, Harris’ has declined.
The survey was conducted between September 3 and September 15. Respondents were asked regarding both Trump and Harris, “please say if you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of that person.”
Among all voters and independents, more respondents viewed both Trump and Harris as “unfavorable” than “favorable.” However, among both groups, a higher percentage indicated they had a favorable opinion of Trump compared to the Democrat.
Forty-four percent of independent voters polled said they have a favorable opinion of Trump, compared to 53% who had an unfavorable opinion of him.
By comparison, only 35% – just over a third – of independent voters told Gallup they viewed Harris favorably. Six in ten independent voters had an unfavorable opinion of her.
The same pattern emerged when looking at the poll’s sample of voters representing all U.S. adults, regardless of party affiliation, with 46% of voters holding a favorable opinion of Trump – slightly higher than the 44% who viewed Harris favorably.

In addition, the percentage of all U.S. adults who viewed Harris in an unfavorable light (54%), was one point higher than the percentage who said the same for Trump (53%), per the September Gallup poll.
As Gallup research consultant Megan Brenan noted, “Trump’s unfavorable rating is seven percentage points higher than his favorable score, and Harris’ is 10 points higher.”
Trump’s apparent advantage among independents proved to be key to this finding, as “both candidates enjoy nearly unanimous positive ratings from their own party faithful and negligible positivity from the opposing party,” Brenan indicated.
Ninety-one percent of Republicans polled viewed Trump favorably compared to 97% of Democrats who viewed him unfavorably. Meanwhile, 94% percent of Democrats viewed Harris favorably compared to 93% of Republicans who viewed her unfavorably.
Brenan noted that 2024 is the third consecutive presidential election in which both major party candidates have favorability ratings under 50%.
She added that “Trump is currently viewed better than he was at a similar point in the 2020 and 2016 campaigns, while Harris’ positive rating is on par with Biden’s in 2020 and well above Clinton’s in 2016.”
By contrast, in every presidential election from 1992 to 2012, “at least one of the candidates, and often both, received positive ratings from a majority of Americans in September of the election year and up until the election,” Brenan wrote.
The same poll found that while Americans’ perception of Trump has improved as of late, their perception of Harris has at the same time worsened.
While the former president’s favorability percentage among all U.S. adults is up a considerable five points (41% to 46%) from where it was a month ago, Harris’ is down three points (from 47% to 44%).
Conversely, Harris’ unfavorability rating is up five points (49% to 54%) from Gallup’s August poll, whereas Trump’s is down by two points (from 55% to 53%).
In a post to X (formerly Twitter), Florida’s Voice Assistant News Director Eric Daugherty called the September Gallup survey “an absolutely devastating poll for Harris.”
“Gallup joins Pew, Atlas, Rasmussen, BigData and NYT in suggesting Trump *nationally* performing better than Harris,” Daugherty wrote.
CatholicVote reported earlier this month: “Due to rules laid out in the U.S. Constitution, the candidate who wins a majority of the Electoral College votes always becomes the president-elect, regardless of who wins the popular vote.”
