Vice President Kamala Harris said she was “glad” to hear former President Donald Trump was safe after the second assassination attempt on him Sunday while he was playing golf in Florida.

“I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America,” Ms. Harris wrote on X.

The former president was the victim of what the FBI is calling “an attempted assassination” Sunday afternoon while at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Mr. Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio also said he was glad the former president is safe.

“I spoke to him before the news was public and he was, amazingly, in good spirits,” he wrote on X. “Still much we don’t know, but I’ll be hugging my kids extra tight tonight and saying a prayer of gratitude.”

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the U.S. Secret Service agents fired at a man pointing an AK-style rifle with a scope into the club toward Mr. Trump. There were also two backpacks and a GoPro camera hanging on the fence where the man was hiding in the shrubbery.

The man dropped the weapon and fled. He was later apprehended.

Fox News reported that the suspect was named Ryan Wesley Routh.

This incident comes roughly two months after Mr. Trump was grazed in the ear by a bullet shot at him during a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

Other Republican lawmakers came out in solidarity with Mr. Trump.

“Just spoke with President Trump. He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country,” Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina wrote on X.

Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida wrote on X that he was “praying for President Trump’s continued safety.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries denounced the incident in an X post.

“Political violence has no place in a democratic society,” the New York Democrat said.
