The former president is reportedly safe – but a second attempt raises concerns of a trend forming.

Donald Trump has survived what appears to be a second attempted assassination Sunday, September 15. Shots were fired at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, around 2 p.m. Eastern, according to officials. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office detained a white man in his 60s in relation to the shooting. The FBI is leading a joint investigation between the bureau, the Secret Service, and the sheriff’s department.

According to witness statements, a man was seen pointing a rifle toward the former president on the golf course, who was moving between holes five and six at the time of the incident. The Secret Service engaged the suspect, who fled first on foot then in a vehicle. He was later caught, and law enforcement recovered a backpack, a go-pro camera, and a semi-automatic AK-47. So far, it appears the would-be assassin did not get a shot off, and that all the shots fired were from the Secret Service once he was spotted.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have reportedly been briefed and say they are glad Trump is safe. Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director, shared a statement that the former president is “Safe following gunshots in his vicinity,” and Trump said in a campaign email: “Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.”

Though Trump was unharmed in this latest attempt, it brings back to mind the attempt on his life in Butler, PA, when he was injured, just two months ago.
