President Biden said Tuesday that the death in the West Bank of American activist Aysenur Ezgi Egyi, who was said to be killed by an Israeli soldier, was likely due to an accident from an errant bullet.
“Apparently, it was an accident. [Bullet] ricocheted off the ground and [Ms. Egyi] just got hit by accident. I’m working that out now,” Mr. Biden told reporters as he was departing the White House for New York.
Mr. Biden’s remarks are the first time he has publicly addressed the death of Ms. Egyi, a Turkish-American who died on Friday. Her death drew a sharp rebuke from Muslim and Arab-American groups.
News reports said Ms. Eygi was shot and killed during a protest in the West Bank town of Beita. In a social media post, the Israel Defense Forces said troops fired toward a person it called “a main instigator” of violence that posed a threat to troops during operations near Beita.
“The IDF is looking into reports that a foreign national was killed as a result of shots fired in the area,” the social media post said.
A statement released by Ms. Eygi’s family posted on social media said she “was peacefully standing for justice when she was killed by a bullet that video shows came from an Israeli military shooter.”
Turkey has blamed Israel for her death.
“The Israeli authorities who commit crimes against humanity and those who unconditionally support them will be held accountable before international courts,” the Turkish government said in a statement.
