Principle: the need for a person to behave ethically and morally is directly proportional to the power or influence wielded by that person.

Thus those in government or the top corporate echelons must be of exemplary character, scrupulously honest and have the highest levels of personal responsibility.

This is vital because a person in a powerful or influential position can by their actions influence for good or ill the lives and wellbeing of large numbers of people.

A criminal in charge of a government can, if permitted to dramatise his criminal impulses, kill or ruin millions.

It may well be  that that opportunity to harm  others attracts those of destructive disposition the way dung attracts flies so that might account for the degeneration of governments into increasing criminality.

That reasoning dictates that the concept of personal responsibility and answerability for one’s mis-conduct absolutely must extend to the very highest in the land. Where it has not thus extended, we have time and again witnessed the destruction of nations and indeed of entire civilisations.

This means that the just laws that bind the People must equally bind (and protect) the very highest in the land without fear or favour.

And that in turn means the each individual person must be held responsible for their own actions. The phenomenon of persons who have committed or orchestrated or aided and abetted crimes hiding behind the generality of “the government” or “the corporation” must end.

Where a government or corporation or indeed any organisation has harmed someone, that harm is committed by specific persons, ordered by specific persons and  dreamed up by  specific person and for each crime the specific persons whose deeds resulted in the crime must be identified and brought to justice no matter who they are.

Let’s take the imaginary example of XYZ pharmaceutical corporation whose vaccine is found to have killed several thousand people. Investigation reveals that there was scientific malpractise in the testing of the vaccine that hid its adverse effects and deceptive marketing was used to portray it as “safe”.

As a result, several thousand trusting members of the public are injured by the vaccine and die.

A  crime of magnitude has been committed, a crime that was the result of specific actions by specific persons.

It is not good enough to just fine the XYZ orporation and leave the responsible individuals scot-free. The correct action is to  investigate and find out who ordered the deception and who carried it out.

Organisations are composed of individual thinking persons who make decisions, give orders and carry out actions. It may be fair enough to prosecute whoever assaulted people by injecting them with a dangerous chemical but behind them are those who planned and organised it and had the injecting done knowing lives were being endangered.

There is always a who. And that specific person has a name.

Ultimately, where a corporation kills people though malice or negligence the responsibility for it rests with the senior person of the organisation – unless he or she was deceived by wrongdoers in the echelons below them.

Therefore,  henceforth the executives and directors and majority shareholders of a company or  group that harms people shall be held accountable for that harm.

This assigning of responsibility and the knowledge that there will be personal consequences for wrongdoing will raise the level of necessity of the managers, owners and policy makers of organisations and governments to insist more vigorously upon  the conscientious, honest and diligent conduct of their minions.
