A coalition of Arab American and Muslim leaders on Monday condemned the Biden administration for its silence over the death of an American activist whom eyewitnesses said was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier during a demonstration in the West Bank.

The coalition, which operates as Abandon Harris and has repeatedly criticized the administration for its delay in supporting a cease-fire in Gaza, noted that neither President Biden nor Vice President Harris has publicly addressed the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi.

“An American citizen was murdered by a so-called ally of the United States — a foreign military that is drenched in U.S. taxpayer money, bolstered by billions in military aid and certainly killed with a weapon bought and made in the U.S. And what have we heard from the leaders of this nation? Not a word. Not from President Joe Biden. Not from Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for the presidency,” the group said in a statement.

Since Ms. Eygi was killed on Friday, the highest-ranking U.S. official so far to address her death is Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who simply said the State Department is investigating the incident. Mr. Blinken declined to say whether the death would prompt the Biden administration to reevaluate the decision to keep sending weapons to Israel

Abandon Harris said the silence from the administration’s top leaders is “beyond shameful” and amounts to a “betrayal.”

“How dare this administration remain silent as one of their own citizens is gunned down by a foreign military? How can Biden and Harris be trusted to protect the lives of Americans here at home when they can’t even muster the basic humanity to speak about the murder of an American abroad, killed by their own ally?” the group said.

News reports said Ms. Eygi, a Turkish American, was shot and killed during a protest in the West Bank town of Beita. In a social media post, the Israel Defense Forces said troops fired toward a person it called “a main instigator” of violence that posed a threat to troops during operations near Beita.

“The IDF is looking into reports that a foreign national was killed as a result of shots fired in the area,” the social media post said.

A statement released by Ms. Eygi’s family posted on social media said she “was peacefully standing for justice when she was killed by a bullet that video shows came from an Israeli military shooter.”

Turkey has blamed Israel for her death.

“The Israeli authorities who commit crimes against humanity and those who unconditionally support them will be held accountable before international courts,” the Turkish government said in a statement.
